i was asked to draw a little somethin' up of my favorite literary figure/author/character... whatever!
i picked shel silverstein. his poems and books were essential to my childhood. i'm 26 years old and reading "the missing piece" still makes me all gooey and emotional.

Dear katiecookie,

I am writing you on behalf of the My Hero Project.

www.myhero.com

The MY HERO Project is a not-for-profit, project-based, learning resource on the internet that celebrates the best of humanity. Every school year we work with over 40,000 classrooms in celebrating heroes.

May I have your permission to feature your “shel silverstein” in our digital gallery www.myhero.com/gallery for National Poetry Month? Together with a short artist’s statement about heroism, I could create a MY HERO Gallery Page that not only celebrates the subject but gives you, the artist, exposure to the 3-4M hits per month that we currently enjoy by linking directly to your website.

Our mission is to engage young minds in the process of celebrating heroism and in so doing, to promote role models, non-violence, peace, human rights and tolerance; values personified in this inspirational poet and the art you’ve dedicated to him.

Here are some Gallery Pages made from the work of other professional artists who are part of The MY HERO Gallery:

And there are many more.

Please write me at david@myheroproject.org and let me know if this appeals to you.

Thank you for your consideration,
David Kemker

Cute! What a great nod to Mister Shel!

I would be curious to see what you did with "The Missing Piece" if the inclination hit you! ;)

Not only was Shel a great writer and illustrator, but he penned quite a number of classic songs such as "Cover of the Rolling Stone", "Freaker's Ball", "Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout (Would Not Take the Garbage Out)", and "Peanut Butter Sandwich".

so true. His books are always inspirational/ heartwarming. The first time I read the book The Giving Tree
I cried. I thought it won't happen again but it did the second time I read it :XD:

i loved the giving tree when i was a kid, but the guy on the back cover scared me. years later i found it was the author. i had always wondered why they would put such a scary looking guy on the cover of a kids book...
